2014-2015 Class Offerings

Be sure to check back with us often as our class offerings for the 2014-2015 season will be updated!  We are always exploring new ideas and exciting opportunities for our students!

DANCE CLASSES

Preschool Dance for ages 2.5-4 years   Our preschool dance and movement classes explore rhythm, song, body awareness, locomotor movement, and creative expression. Exercises are geared to the developmental needs of preschoolers. Includes ballet positions, beginning terminology and musicality taught with games, songs, and stories. Rhythms and gross motor skills are developed through beginning tap dancing.

Preschool  Tumbling  (Ages 3-5)  We know that little ones love to roll, jump and flip, and participating in a tumbling class is perfect for all of those fun activites!  Students develop their motor-planning skills and strategies through the introduction of basic tumbling skills. Great for gaining upper body strength and flexibility also!

Dance Combo IA (Grades K-1)This Ballet and Tap combo class is where children will begin to learn more control and technique for dance.  The combination style provides younger students with a strong introduction to two basic genres of dance.

Ballet I (Grades K-1/Mini)  Budding ballerinas are introduced to ballet barre and center floorwork. Strength, flexibility, and agility are goals in this class. One to two years is spent at this level as the syllabus grows to include basic barre work, body directions, small and large jumps, preparation for pirouettes and a better understanding of musicality.

Ballet II (Grades 2-4/Petite and Grades 4-6/Junior)   One to two years is spent at this level, stressing turn out, extension and jumps adding more center floor work and beginning pointe. Coordination of head and arms continue as does ballet history and musicality. A student's stretch, strength and grace at this level begins to develop.

Ballet III (Grades 7-12/Seniors )  Includes more difficult barre and floor combinations including beats, pirouettes, petit and grand allegro and advanced progressions. Dancers are expected to perform more technically and emotionally proficient as they progress through the levels.  Ballet en pointe may be recommended based on the student's strength and ability.

Lyrical Dance (Grades 2-12)
Lyrical dance is a combination of the beauty of ballet with the expressive abilities of modern and jazz. Generally, lyrical is done to more contemporary music. It is designed for intermediate and above dancers who have experience in both dance forms.  Enrollment in lyrical also requires enrollment in ballet technique.

Jazz (Grades 2-Adults)
Jazz technique coordinates with the ballet program promoting grace, flexibility of movement, coordination of heads, arms, jumps and turns. Classic jazz movements including isolations, stretching, turns, leaps, patterns and combinations are taught at each level appropriate to age and skill. Contemporary music is used and an evolving sense of rhythm and body awareness is illustrated through modern across the floor and dance combinations

Tap (Grades Pre K-Adults)
Tap focuses on timing and rhythm, balance and coordination. Beginning through advanced tap technique in several styles including hoofing and classical rhythm tapping. Dancers are taught the use of heads, arms, kicks, and turns to enhance tap rhythms and styles at each level appropriate to age and skill.

Hip Hop & Street Jazz (Grades K-12)
The ultimate in fun and fitness. Street dancing at it's best. An evolving combination of rhythmic isolations, jumps and turns done to current music and rap sensations. Only age appropriate movements, music and costuming will be permitted.

Tumbling Classes (Grades K-12) are also offered.  Classes are divided by ages and then divided again by level of ability.  Interested students should phone the studio at 565-0381 to set up an informal meeting with our tumbling instructors.

Adult Dance and Fitness Classes:  Why should the kids have all the fun?  We offer classes for adults in tap (beg and int./adv); Pilates and Toning; and Jazz Dance Fitness.

Students will spend time exploring character development and emotions through movement and how it relates to acting. Strongly recommended for those students enrolled in Triple Threats SR!

JUNIOR THEATER FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLE This performing company provides talented young men and young ladies between the ages of 7-18 the opportunity to work together in a “team” environment as they challenge themselves in the three critical components of musical theater: Voice, dance and acting. The company members will study and perform all styles of musical theater on a more advanced and in-depth level. They will perform repertoire from current and classic Broadway shows, learn a bit of musical theater history and study the careers and styles of legendary Broadway directors and choreographers such as Michael Kidd, Jerome Robbins, Stephen Schwartz, and Bob Fosse. Members of the JTFPE will travel to Atlanta in January of 2015 to participate in the Junior Musical Theater Festival sponsored by iTheatrics, Music Theater International, and Disney Musicals.  The group will also perform at local and regional events and will be encouraged to attend master classes and conventions. Members are required to purchase a performance costume; his/her own footwear, tights (ladies), and a  JTFPE team jacket and shirt.  Regular attendance is mandatory and too many missed classes will result in the student being asked to withdraw from MTPT.

Private Piano (ages 5-Adults)
Private piano lessons offer one on one attention in using piano exercises, techniques and playing songs for beginners to the most advanced students in all styles from classical to jazz.

Music for Little Mozarts (ages 4-6)  Designed to encourage a love for music in young children ages four to six, Music for Little Mozarts is a group piano course centering around the adventures of Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse as they learn about music. In addition to a perfect beginning piano class, this fun, imaginative series will also help develop singing and listening skills, plus impart an appreciation for many musical styles. Each class is limited to 4 students.  All students must have a keyboard or piano for home practice!

Private Harp (ages 5-Adults) Instructor: Lynne Meyer
Who Can Play the Harp? Anyone -- that's who! I have found that it is never too late to learn to play an instrument you love. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and abilities and I have taught a huge age range of students- from age 6 on through their 60's. In recent years I have seen a large increase in the number of beginning adult students, which is great news!
Instruction will emphasize:
Healthy hand position & technique
Quality sound & beautiful tone
Practice techniques for the individual
Music reading
Performance skills
Ensemble experience
Harp care & maintenance
Career preparation
If you are considering lessons, here are some basic points to consider:
• All students should be prepared to rent or buy a harp to practice on at home.
• Any student will learn to play the harp more quickly if they are already able to read music before beginning harp lessons, however, I do not require prior musical knowledge.
• When deciding if your child is old enough to begin taking harp lessons, rather than going strictly by age, a good guideline is that small children must be able to sit still & pay attention through a 1/2 hour lesson, and be able to practice 15 minutes each day at home.
• I also expect all students regardless of age to have a strong desire to learn how to play the harp well, approach any suggestions or instructions I give with an open mind & "can do" attitude, and to supplement their learning experience by listening to recordings of harp music and attending live concerts, clinics or harp circle meetings as often as reasonably possible.
